Getting started

What do I need to use KinLogs?

A Windows or Mac computer with a web browser such as Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox. Plug in the stick and open the KinLogs file. Nothing to install.

Can I look things up on my phone or iPad?

Your full KinLogs only opens with the app on your stick, on a computer. That keeps it under your control. On a phone or iPad, the KinLogs Reader opens shared copies: a family or handover copy with its access code. It shows only the sections you chose when you made the copy, read-only, and nothing is uploaded.

How long does it take to fill in?

Most people spend a few evenings on it. Start with "Start here" and "Key people", which matter most, and come back to the rest. KinLogs remembers where you got to.

Do I have to fill in everything?

No. Mark sections as not applicable and they drop out of the family copy.

Does it work in Scotland and Northern Ireland?

Yes. KinLogs is written for the UK and uses the right terms where the law differs, such as confirmation instead of probate in Scotland, and continuing power of attorney.

How often should I update it?

Whenever something changes, and at least once a year. KinLogs shows which sections are due for review.

Passwords and security

What if I forget my password?

Reset it by answering your security questions, or with the recovery key you print when you set up. Nobody else, including us, can open your file.

What if I lose the stick?

That's why there are two. A lost stick is encrypted and unreadable to whoever finds it. Use your second stick and make a new backup.

Does anything go online?

Not unless you choose KinLogs Sync. The standard edition can't connect to the internet at all.

Is it a will or a power of attorney?

No. KinLogs records where your will and powers of attorney are and who's named in them. You still need a solicitor or a proper will service to make them.

Your family

What does my family need to open their copy?

The family copy file and the access code on their card. On a computer, they open the file in any web browser. On an iPad or phone, they go to the KinLogs Reader page and choose the file there. Tapping the file on an iPad only shows a blank preview.

Can they change anything?

No. Family and handover copies are read-only. Nothing they do changes your file.

Can I give different people different information?

Yes. You choose which sections go into the family copy. With KinLogs+ you can make a separate handover copy for each person involved in your business.

What happens if I update my KinLogs after making the family copy?

Make a new family copy and replace the old one on the second stick. With Sync, linked family sticks fetch the newest copy automatically.

KinLogs+ and business

Who is KinLogs+ for?

Sole directors, LLP members and partners, sole traders, people running a side business, and landlords who own property personally.

Do I still need a personal KinLogs?

Most people want both, and KinLogs+ includes both. Your personal KinLogs points your family to the Business KinLogs.

Is it legal or accounting advice?

No. KinLogs+ helps you see gaps and record the facts. Your solicitor and accountant should check your arrangements.

KinLogs Sync

Do I need Sync?

No. The two-stick kit works on its own. Sync saves you copying changes to the second stick yourself, and keeps an encrypted copy away from home.

Can you read my KinLogs if I use Sync?

No. It's encrypted on your computer before it's uploaded, and only your password, security answers or recovery key can open it.

What happens if I stop paying?

There's a 30-day grace period. After that, Sync stops, and everything keeps working on your sticks.
